5 Fun and Educational Museums to Visit in Florida

Sometimes we try to find fun filled activities that the whole family can enjoy and often forget that our state offers tons of educational activities. Traveling around Florida, you’ll find no shortage of history and culture. This state is full of wonderful places you and your child can visit to learn about different subjects. If you’re looking for something educational to do on a weekend, visiting any of these museums would be a great choice:

Kennedy Space Center

One thing that makes Florida special is its storied history with NASA (and being the current home to rocket launches along the east coast). You and your family can dive right into space exploration at the visitor complex of Kennedy Space Center. Even if your child isn’t excited about space now, they will be after they visit this museum. Between interactive exhibits about NASA’s history, space simulators to Mars and astronaut ice cream, there’s something for everyone at the Kennedy Space Center.

Salvador Dali Museum

If your child is an aspiring artist, the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg is a must-see. This museum has the largest collection of Dali’s works outside of Spain, the artist’s native country. The waterfront building gives a preview of the surreal paintings you'll find inside. If you decide to visit this museum, you will need to make a reservation in advance of your trip.

Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

Going to the Florida Keys? While you’re there, be sure to visit the Hemingway house. While the author only lived in the house for a few years, it’s a great place to visit to gain insight into his life at that time. It’s also a fun place to spot six-toed cats. Hemingway’s first cat, Snowball, had six toes on her front paws, and her descendents with the same gene basically run the place now.

Orlando Science Center

There’s always something going on at the Orlando Science Center. Science lovers of all ages will enjoy exhibits that tie back to nature, humanity, history and everything in between. In summer of 2022, the Bionic Me exhibit will allow visitors to see and experience the technology that has improved human life, from diagnosing illnesses to giving those with lost limbs the ability to walk again.

St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum

At the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, you and your family will be transported back to the Golden Age of Piracy. This interactive museum is covered in artifacts, both real and recreated, from a time when pirates first sailed into St. Augustine. It will give your child an opportunity to learn about history they might not learn about in the classroom.

Museums are great places where children can interact with and learn about all kinds of subjects. Our Lake and Marion private schools instill leadership and compassion in our students through rigorous academics and a foundation of faith.
