Helping Your Child Choose a Career

Choosing a career can be difficult, and the process can take a lot of time. Luckily, your child has you by his side for research and decision-making. We’ve gathered some information to help you and your child choose his career!

Aptitude Tests
Tests, such as the Myers-Briggs and Holland Codes, can help determine and design a career path based on his personality. Don’t base such a big decision solely on these assessments;, use them as a contributing factor to the overall plan. Your child will discover his natural strengths and base his career on them.

Encourage His Passions
Help your child identify his strengths, develop his passions, and encourage him to pursue them. If he’s currently unsure, give him activities to see what will pique his interests. Expose your child to new opportunities by taking him to museums, science centers, restaurants, and more. All of which can be accomplished virtually, or by curbside takeout orders. Be patient with his self-discovery process, and continue experimenting! Remember not to force him into anything; he may be an extension of you, but he is an entirely different person. Steering him in a certain direction may make him feel pressured.

Find a Mentor
Is there someone you can have your child talk to in the industries he’s interested in? This person can be a good role model in the field your child is considering pursuing. If he wants to cook, for instance, introduce him to a chef. Prepare by gathering a lot of questions to ask. You might even be lucky enough to visit their place of work. Through mentorship, he will feel inspired and motivated to get moving!

Inspiring Peers
You are who you associate with! Your child should have friends that are just as motivated and who constantly inspire and uplift him. They can go on this journey to discovery together, which makes the whole process much smoother!
